SEPIA SATURDAY ~ Who are the people in these unknown photos? They were in my maternal grandmother’s photo collection

We all have pictures in our collections that we cannot identify.  I have found, over the years, that sometimes the identities are revealed as we gain more knowledge of the family and connect with more cousins.  Those new cousins may have knowledge that we don’t have.

I never throw away old photos for just that reason.

My maternal family on my grandfather’s side (Milne) are from Aberdeen, Scotland.  The fact that one of the photos is from an Aberdeen studio and another from a MILNE Aberdeen studio certainly leads me to believe these may be ancestor photos.  These photos were among those belonging to my grandmother, Florence Bowden who married Joseph A. Milne.  Joseph’s father Andrew Charles Milne was born in Aboyne, Aberdeen, Scotland in 1856 and immigrated to the U.S. through Canada in 1868.
 
Today I’d like to share some pictures that I haven’t been able to identify……yet.  Perhaps someone out there can shed some light on them?

There is some speculation that this is a photo of Edna Bowden (my grandmother's only sibling) - but I cannot say for sure

This young lady has some of the same facial features as other Milne or Bowden women in my family - but who is she?

I found this photo today while going through my grandmother's pictures - this lady looks very much like my grandmother, Florence Bowden Milne - but it is not her.  Could this be her sister Edna?

If anyone reading this can help identify these people, I’d love to hear from you.

SEPIA SATURDAY ~ This week’s theme is SWIMWEAR

WHAT IS SEPIA SATURDAY?

I’ve pretty much grown up around the water.  From my earliest years I remember the cottage that my paternal grandparents, Harry & Marie Gould, had at Lake Huron.  Click on this link to read about the cottage My Grandparents Enjoying their Lake Huron cottage in Michigan.

From Michigan we moved to Pompano Beach, Florida and were always a short drive from the beach.  Then in 1965 we moved to San Diego, California – more beaches.

I can locate photos of lake and beach time and swimwear from my paternal side of the family.  However, other than a couple of pictures of my Uncle Bob, none from my maternal side.
 
So, where are all of the pictures of me and my brother in our swimwear?  Good question.  Maybe I better dig through those boxes under the stairs.
 
Today, I’ll share these photos with you.
 
Here’s my Dad, Harry Norman Gould on the beach at an unknown location, with his father Harry Whipple Gould – circa 1930.

Here are my Dad, his first wife Elaine and both of my paternal grandparents, Harry & Marie Gould, with others at Lake Huron circa 1933-1935.

Next is a photo of my Dad with his mother Marie, on the beach in Florida.  My Dad worked as a lifeguard in the early 1960’s.

And, here’s the only swimwear photo I can find from my Mom’s side of the family.

My Uncle, Robert Andrew Milne, who served in World War II as a Medic.  Here is in on the beach (he's on the left) in an unknown location, during his service.  I don’t know who his friend is.

And, finally, there had to be at least one of me.  So here are Ron and I on a vacation cruise in 1993.  We were at Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica.  Ron’s always a good sport and the photographer asked him to wear the hat.

My grandmothers, great grandmothers and aunts, all wore hats.  Some of them were born in the mid to late 1800’s and came of age at the turn of the 20th century.  Hats were all the rage back then.  This trend continued into the 1950's.  The men also wore hats.  In fact, I had so many pictures of my ancestors in hats, it was difficult to choose which ones to use.

My paternal grandmother, Marie Lindsay Gould had her photo taken with hats on more than one occasion.  I didn’t know my grandma until she was in her 60’s.  By then it wasn’t fashionable to wear hats.  I wonder if she missed those times?

Now to my maternal grandmother and great grandmother.  Florence Hunter Bowden Bell is my great grandmother.  Born in 1869 in Kentucky and died in 1946 in Missouri.  She had two daughters, the oldest, a name sake, Florence Lee Nora Bowden (my grandmother) and Edna Mabel Bowden.

In times past newspapers would take pictures of people walking in downtown areas and publish them.  I don’t know how many of you have photos like these?  If you do, please share.

Here’s my great grandmother, Florence Hunter Bowden Milne Bell, mentioned above and her daughter, my grandmother, Florence Bowden Milne standing downtown together.  And a separate one of my great grandmother, in foreground.  I don’t know if these were taken in Detroit (that’s the most likely place), but they could have been elsewhere.

I’ve covered groups and hats.  Let’s post one of my favorite photos of my grandmother, Florence Bowden Milne sitting in a studio in a rocking chair.  Her Aunt, Grace Hunter married Charles Henry Fenner.  He and his brothers, Nicholas & William Fenner owned a couple of photo studios in Ohio.  Many of the pictures I have from my family have the Fenner studio name on them.  I feel very fortunate to have had a photography studio connected with my family.

Let’s not leave the men out of this story.  They wore hats too.  Here are both my grandfathers and my Dad sporting their hats. And lastly, my great grandfather William Val Gould (1859-1924), always debonair.

SEPIA SATURDAY ~ My Grandparents, Marie & Harry Gould enjoying their Lake Huron cottage home in Michigan–early 1950’s

This weeks theme for Sepia Saturday is Rooms, Tables, Chairs and Wood. 

My paternal grandparents, Harry Gould and Marie Lindsay Gould owned a cottage right on Lake Huron in Michigan.  I remember going there as a young girl.  My grandmother loved to swim.  Even in her later years when they lived in Florida, we would go to the beach and she would get right into the ocean to swim.  She always wore her bathing cap.

Here are two pictures that feature my grandparents relaxing in their cottage.  They would have been in their mid to late 60’s when these photos were taken.

I wonder what my grandmother is thinking as she sits there?  She seems to be staring out the window and in deep thought.   Their cottage was small, as cottages tend to be.  This is looking from the sitting area/living room into the dining area and kitchen.  My grandma also loved to cook and she was very good at it.  I wish I had some of her recipes.  I do have recipes from my other grandmother (the thing is, she wasn’t a very good cook).  Isn’t that just how it goes?

Here is my grandpa sitting on the couch that would be in basically the same area that my grandma was sitting in, only on the other side of that room. In fact, he could have taken the picture of her from where he is sitting. He looks to be browsing a newspaper or magazine.  I see a book sitting on the end table atop what looks like a box.  The book looks very much like a Bible to me, but I can’t tell for sure.

I was just telling my friend and fellow blogger, Debby Warner Anderson, that looking at these pictures makes me very nostalgic.  I want to go back in time and hug my grandparents.

Here’s a map of the exact lot that the cottage was located on.  And following that a screenshot of a street view via Google maps of what it looks like now.  The red arrow is pointing to the water you can just barely see in the photo.  I don’t have an exact street address of the property.  However, I obtained a plat map at the courthouse during one of my trips to Michigan.

 

I mentioned earlier that my grandma loved to swim.  Here she is with my Dad (her only child) on the beach in Pompano Beach, Florida.  My Dad worked as a lifeguard at the time.  This would have been 1960-1965.  Since there is a wooden beach chair in the background of this photo, it fits in with today’s theme quite well.

SEPIA SATURDAY ~ My maternal grandparents, Joseph & Florence Milne and my Uncle Robert Milne–circa 1950

This is a picture of my grandparents and their son (my Uncle Bob).  The photo was taken in the basement of their home in Detroit, Michigan.

I haven’t enhanced or made changes to the photo, because sometimes I like to see them in their original condition.  A little yellowed and a bit frayed at the corners.

I don’t have any information about what the occasion for this dinner was.  I do know that I’ve seen other pictures of parties (such as their 50th anniversary in 1956) that were thrown in their basement.

Everyone is dressed up.  Of course, back then it was quite common for all the men to wear ties and the women to wear nice dresses and pearls even if they were just having someone over for a casual dinner.  It’s how it was back then.  We certainly don’t dress that way now.  I kind of wish we still did.

I’m not sure of the exact address my grandparents were living at this time.  I have their address in 1940, from the census, but I believe they moved to another home after that.

GOOD FIND - While I was writing this post and reviewing family photos I’ve scanned, I located another picture that would appear to be taken at the same time. My grandmother is wearing the same dress and her hair looks like it’s done the same way as the picture above.  My grandfather’s tie is tilted the same way as the photo above and he’s wearing a suit.

It looks like my grandmother is opening a card in this second photo.  Was it her birthday or perhaps their anniversary?

Here’s a question.  Why is there a Jewish Menorah on the mantle?  How interesting.  According to family lore and DNA, we don’t have any Jewish ancestry.  Mmmmm…could this be someone else’s home they were having dinner at?  Something to look further into.  Intriguing.

SEPIA SATURDAY ~ Great grandparent’s pictures–How many do you have?

We each have 8 great grandparents. Depending on how old or young, you are, you may or may not have pictures of them.  Depending on the research you've been able to do, maybe you don't even know all their names.
 
Photography has been around since 1839.  I’m not going to go into the history of photography here, because I’m not an expert.  However, if you would like to learn more, there are experts out there.  One of them, I’ve followed for years is Maureen Taylor.  She is also known as the Photo Detective.  I own several of her books. She featured one of my family photos on her website in December 2008 you can see it here – Photo Clones, Duplicates in the Family.

The question today is, how many photos do you have of your great grandparents?  Here is what I have for me and my husband, Ron.

Sadly, for Ron’s family I have been able to locate pictures of only 3 out of 8 of his great grandparents.  If you are reading this and have any pictures of the family mentioned here, please contact me.

This has been an interesting study.  I cropped and enhanced photos as I was writing this post.  Always a good chance to review the images we have.

Because of the time frame of the lives of all of mine and Ron’s great grandparents, there were likely photos taken.  Most of the people mentioned here were alive after photography was common.  Most of them well into the 1900’s.
 
How many pictures of your great grandparents do you have?  Or maybe if you are of a younger generation, then how many pictures of your 2nd great grandparents do you have?  I’d love to see the pictures.
