YEARBOOK PHOTOS ~ How many have you located? Here are some of mine.

Ancestry has recently offered their Yearbook collection for free. I thought it might be a good time to review how many yearbook photos I have collected over the years.  I have an Ancestry subscription so I’ve been collecting yearbooks pictures for a while.

When I add a yearbook photo or information to Legacy I use an Event I created called….yes, you guessed it “Yearbook.”

I’ll use the Search feature in Legacy to determine how many people have Events with the yearbook title.  To do this I went to the tab “Search” then to “Find” and then used this method.

The list consisted of 32 people.  To be truthful, I was a little surprised that it was that small a list.  But, yearbooks haven’t always been around and I have quite a few ancestors who never went far enough in school to appear in a yearbook.  This does encourage me to go hunting for more photos though.

Once I have the list up on my screen, I then created a hash tag in Legacy and added that hash tag to all those individuals.  Going forward, each time I do locate a yearbook photo or article I can add the hash tag immediately.  I find the hash tag feature in Legacy to be very helpful.

After going through my list here are some of my photos.  About half of the list of 32 did not contain photos of the person, just their names in the yearbook.

HERE’S WHY I THINK MY DAD WAS 20 YEARS OLD WHEN HE GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL IN 1933?

Most of us assume that graduation age for high school is age 17 or 18.  Right?  There are exceptions.  If a child is particularly bright and graduates early  If a child was held back due to grades or illness, perhaps they would graduate at an older age.

Let’s discuss my Dad, Harry Norman Gould.  I have always known his birthday, 31 Dec 1912.  Born on New Year’s Eve.  We celebrated his birthday, along with a new year, every year.  That would mean he probably graduated high school in 1930 or 1931.  However, I had never located a high school yearbook for him and had no school records.

FINALLY,  (after a dozen years of searching) I found my Dad’s high school yearbook picture.  Thank you to MyHeritage for having this yearbook collection for Northwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan, for this particular year.  I had done this search on Ancestry many times, but not located the yearbook.  It is still not available on that site.  One more reason for me to be happy I signed up for MyHeritage recently.  Yes, I still have my Ancestry subscription too.

To my surprise, I found my Dad in a 1933 yearbook.  And there was the handsome portrait photo I have always had for him.  My grandmother wrote the date 1933 on it.  I never thought it was a high school photo, because I “assumed” he graduated in 1930 or 1931. 
 
Here’s his birth certificate from Michigan.  I sent for this record back in 2005. Every item on this certificate except for one, coincides with all I know about my Dad and what I’ve gathered in evidence to support that.
 
The one exception is his father’s name being listed as Henry W. Gould instead of Harry W. Gould.  I have learned that Harry and Henry are often interchangeable from one record to the next, so that exception doesn’t bother me.

Note the date of filing is 1920.  My Dad would have been nearly 8 at the time this certificate was issued.   I wonder if there had been no record of his birth prior to that time?

Was the certificate required in order for him to enter school?  If so, why did he enter so late?  His age on 13 Dec 1920 was 7 years 11 months and 12 days.  That would certainly account for him not graduating until 1933.

Here is the original scan of that photo of my Dad, with my grandmother’s writing on it, identifying it as her son, Norm and the year 1933.  Prior to this I had thought it was a portrait photo taken of my Dad after high school.



And here is the photo as it stood in my grandmother’s home on Asbury Park in Detroit (indicated with an arrow).  That’s me at about age two.



I took another look today to try and find a birth record online, for my Dad.  Family Search didn’t have it.  When I looked on Ancestry this is what they have for Michigan births.

NOTE – The index goes to 1911.  Just my luck.
 


My Dad’s age seems to be listed correctly, based on a 1912 year of birth, in the 1920, 1930 and 1940 census records.

For now, I am going to conclude that my Dad did graduate from high school at an older age.
 
I know he had scarlet fever when he was a child, leaving him deaf in his left ear.  I don’t know how old he was when he got sick.  Perhaps, because of that he had to miss some schooling or had to repeat a grade.

SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY ~ Library Collections

My husband’s father’s family came to San Diego, California between 1910 and 1917. His father, Gordon, was the third child born to Charles & Daisy Bright Hall.  The two older children were born in Pennsylvania.
 
My husband has always said that his father was a cheerleader for the San Diego State Aztecs.  Those were the days when cheerleaders were men and not the girls we see today.

I’ve always wanted to find an SDSU yearbook to try and locate a picture of Gordon during his time in college.

I looked in the yearbook collection on Ancestry.com and didn’t find anything.  However, today I was re reading Gordon’s funeral notice and I read that he was a member of Phi Lambda XI while he attended the university.  AH HA!!

That is information I don’t remember seeing before.  It’s always amazing to me what stands out when I go back over records. 
I decided to conduct a web search for Phi Lambda XI.  I used Google and saw that the second link on the page looked promising.

Once I clicked on that I was taken to the San Diego State Library Digital Collections page.  OH BOY!  What can I find here?



I clicked on “Collections” and found that this digital library is jam packed with information.  However, the one item I was looking for were the yearbooks.  I scrolled down the page and THERE THEY WERE!

What does that say underneath the image?
  
"San Diego State yearbooks from 1902 to the last published in 1984."



And there they were.  All layed out on the page with the cover of each edition and the year. 



You are able to select the edition you’re interested in and view it or download it.  You can look at each individual page or use the dropdown menu in the upper left corner to advance any number of pages.



I was not able to locate Gordon Hall’s picture in the class photos for 1932, 1933, 1934 or 1935.  In order to find out if he appeared elsewhere in any of the books I will have to go through page by page as there isn’t a table of contents or an index in the editions I looked at.

According to his son, Gordon did not graduate.  I wonder what took him away from his studies?
