ON THIS DAY IN OUR FAMILY ~ Who was born on February 4th?

Sometimes it’s funny how things go.  I woke up this morning thinking about writing an On This Day, blog post.

I like to occasionally pick a random day and find out who in our family was born, married or died on a particular date.

As I was sitting at my desk I received a text message about a new family member.  A much awaited and already loved first grandbaby for both sides of this family. This is my sister-in-law’s sisters family.

Since all are living I won’t reveal full names here.  But BIG Congratulations to Hilary & Garrett, Debbie & Dan and Denise & Mark.

Now let’s see who else in our tree has a birthday on February 4th?

Rebecca DOWNER1738 in Sunderland, Colonial Massachusetts – distant relation – my paternal step 3rd great grandfather’s wife’s grandmother

Mary DOTEN1745 in Plymouth, Colonial Massachusetts – my paternal 5th great grandaunt

Charles WALLACE1826 in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania – my husband’s paternal 2nd great grandaunt’s husband

Mary LEONARD1842 in Ohio – my paternal grandaunt’s husband’s mother

Walter W. DAVY1844 in Tiverton, Devon, England – husband of my maternal 1st cousin 3 times removed

Ettie L. SMITH1867 in St. Lawrence Co., New York – my husband’s paternal 1st cousin twice removed

Mary G. HARBOLD1879 in Dillsburg, York, Pennsylvania – distant relation – my father’s first wife’s husband’s mother

Nettie M. DILLON1909 in South Point, Lawrence, Ohio - wife of my maternal 3rd cousin twice removed

Living KOVACINSKI – born in Michigan – my paternal 2nd cousin twice removed

And last but not least our newest family member – baby girl Shafer.

I always like to post photos of those I mention, if I have them.

Left to right - Charles Wallace, Mary Leonard & Nettie Dillon

ON THIS DATE ~ It’s my nephew’s birthday today–he is turning 30–let’s see who else in our family tree shares January 24th as a significant event

My nephew turns 30 today.  Those years certainly flew by.  My niece and nephew have been very important to me ever since the day they were born.  In honor of Joshua’s 30th birthday, let’s see who else shares January 24th as an event date – birth, marriage or death.

I used the Legacy Search function to quickly create my list.  Search>Find>Detailed search. Then I set 3 conditions as seen in the screen shot below.  Under “how to look” it is generally better to use “contains” rather than “equal to.”  Just in case you have a typo or other error.

My list was created with the click of a mouse.  There are 23 individuals on the list.  How are they connected to me?  Let’s find out.

BIRTHS

FAUST, Mary – 24 Jan 1890 - my husband’s 1st cousin twice removed’s wife

GOULD, Joshua – 24 Jan 1991 – my nephew to whom I’ve dedicated this post

GOULD, Nina Laura – 24 Jan 1877 - an unlinked individual added in my search for my paternal 3rd great grandparents

HANSHAW, Gary King – 24 Jan 1927 - 1st husband of my maternal 3rd cousin twice removed

HART, Henry – 24 Jan 1795 - my paternal 3rd great grandfather

LYONS, Jane Anne – 24 Jan 1926 - she is listed in my maternal grandmother’s journal and I have not yet determined if she is related to us or not

MILNE, Henry – 24 Jan 1856 -  my maternal great granduncle’s wife’s brother

ORR, Fred Calvin – 24 Jan 1867 - relationship to me unknown, part of my search for my paternal 3rd great grandparents

MARRIAGES

BOWEN, Peggy to Abram BRIGHT on 24 Jan 1833 – my maternal 1st cousin 5 times removed

CORNELIUS, Joseph Edward to Carolyn GEORGE on 24 Jan 1958 – my stepfather’s marriage to his 2nd wife

HART, Leslie G. to Johanna TAGLAUER on 24 Jan 1918 – my paternal 2nd cousin twice removed

LUNSFORD, Andrew J. to Martha E. VERMILLION on 24 Jan 1856 – my maternal 3rd great granduncle

DEATHS

BURRELL, Isaac Jr. – 24 Jan 1863 – relationship to me unknown, part of my search for my paternal 3rd great grandparents

DECLUTE, George – 24 Jan 1926 – paternal 1st cousin 3 times removed’s wife’s husband

GILLESPIE, Louise – 24 Jan 1950 – my maternal great grandaunt

GOULD, Martha E. – 24 Jan 1883 - relationship to me unknown, part of my search for my paternal 3rd great grandparents

HALL, Jeremiah Jr. – 24 Jan 1776 – my husband’s paternal 1st cousin 5 times removed

INGRAHAM, Elizabeth – 24 Jan 1911 – my paternal 2nd great grandaunt’s husband’s sister

McTAGGART, Angus – 24 Jan 1874 – my Dad’s first wife’s great grandfather

The earliest January 24th date is Jeremiah Hall, Jr.’s death in 1776.  The most recent is my nephew’s birthday in 1991.

I always enjoy looking at a particular date in my family tree.  Do you ever do something like this?  You could use your own birthday or someone else’s.  Or your marriage date.  There are all sorts of possibilities.

The bonus to doing this is taking a look at various individuals whom you may not recently have been researching.  In fact, in my case there were a couple for whom I had research notes from 2009 and nothing since.  It would behoove me to return to those ancestors or potential ancestors and conduct more research.

TODAY IN OUR FAMILY ~ It’s my great grandmother, Florence Hunter’s birthday–she would have been 150 years old today

Happy birthday to you Florence Hunter.  You were born 150 years ago today!

You are my maternal great grandmother.  I feel as though I know you from all the research I've done.  I’m blessed to have many pictures of you.

You were born on 7 Aug 1869 in Newport, Campbell, Kentucky to James Gillen Hunter (1832-1894) & Susan Caroline Boggs (1842-1913).

You first married Robert Edward Bowden on 10 Mar 1887, at age 17, in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio.  You and Robert had two daughters, my grandmother, also named Florence, born 31 Jan 1888 and Edna, born 1 Jan 1890.

You and Robert divorced in 1899 and you next married George Keatley Bell (1870-1952), on 16 Oct 1904.  You were married until your death in 1946.  He died 2 Nov 1952.

I remember my grandma telling me that you ran a boarding house.  In fact, it was at that very place that she met my grandfather, Joseph A. Milne.

One of the earliest photos I have is actually a 4 generation portrait taken sometime around 1907, after the birth of your first grandchild, Dorothy Irene Milne.

The next picture is a lovely group picture of you and five of your six sisters.

Here are several more photos I have put together in a video.
(You can enlarge the video to full screen in the lower right hand corner)
Click twice if the video doesn't begin

You died 4 years before I was born, on 27 May 1946 at Osteopathic Hospital in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri.  You were 76 years, 9 months and 20 days old.  You died after a fall at home that fractured your right femur.

I wish we could have met.  I have SO many questions I need to ask you.  How fun it would be to sit down and chat.  I bet you would have many stories to tell me.  Your daughter, my grandmother, was the original family historian and passed that love along to me.

Rest in peace great grandmother.

Happy hunting,
Michigan Girl
