FUNERAL CARD FRIDAY ~ Gordon Charles Hall (1917-1966)

As I continue to go through my office after our move to Montana, I keep running across ancestor items I haven’t seen before.  That’s a good thing because now I can save them and hopefully pass them down to descendants.

My recent finds were 2 funeral cards from Ron’s side of the family. 

Today I will share his father’s card.

I can never bring myself to share a funeral card or other death record without sharing something about the person who died.

Here is a short biography:

Gordon Charles Hall was born 29 Jul 1917 in San Diego, San Diego Co., California.  He was the youngest of 3 children born to Charles Schuyler Hall and Daisy Fern Bright.  He was also the only child born in California.  His older siblings, Dorothy Louise Hall, born 1905 and Robert Walton Hall, born 1907, were both born in Pennsylvania.  In 1913 Charles moved with his wife and 2 children to San Diego. Gordon came along four years later. 

Gordon attended San Diego High School and San Diego State College. As a young man Gordon worked at a gas station.  This would have been in the 1940’s when they still pumped our gas.

In May 1945 Gordon enlisted in the Army and was honorably discharged in Nov 1946. 

On 22 Aug 1948 he married Dorothy Beatrice Fink in Lynwood, Los Angeles, California.  By 1950, according to the census Gordon was working as a Field Representative for Pacific Finance Corp. and living at 4339 35^th St. in San Diego, with his wife and infant son.

Gordon was very proud of his son, an only child. He participated in his son’s school and extracurricular activities. 

Sadly, on 12 Jan 1966, Gordon died suddenly while at work.  The cause of death was listed as a massive heart attack. He was only 48 yrs. old.

This left his wife, Dorothy a widow with a 15 yr old son. They managed with the help of family and friends. Dorothy worked at the old Sears on Cleveland Ave. in San Diego, at the candy counter.

Gordon is fondly remembered by his son and many other family members.

ANCESTORS IN THE NEWS ~ Gordon Charles Hall–my father-in-law, makes news in high school–San Diego, CA., 1935

If you read my blog regularly, you will know that newspapers are a favorite source of information for me.  They cover everything from births to deaths and all the happenings in between.  You can fill in that dash in someone’s life by finding them in newspapers.

 

Gordon Charles Hall is my father-in-law, now deceased.  Naturally, I’ve written about my husband’s parents before.  You can read about their marriage here CHURCH RECORD SUNDAY–Gordon & Dorothy Hall and their burial here THOSE PLACES THURSDAY ~ Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery–San Diego, California.

Today I decided to conduct a search of Genealogy Bank, since they contain many editions and years of the San Diego Union and Tribune.  I am usually searching for marriage announcements or obituaries.  But, today, I decided to see if my husband’s father, who was born, lived and died in San Diego, California, had been mentioned at other times in his life.

BINGO!  Here’s what I found.

Gordon & other boys were given the opportunity to “rule” San Diego government for a day.

An article published in January shows a photo of Gordon Hall sitting at a table with other boys.  This group was appointed as the Board of Education for a day.

Here's the news article associated with the photo above.

Gordon attended San Diego High School and would have been 17 at the time this occurred, probably a Senior.  I expect it was a fun day for all the boys.

Little did Gordon know, at the time, that his son, born 15 years later, would spend a career working for the City of San Diego.

SEPIA SATURDAY ~ From Here to There–By boat, pony, derby car and canoe

This particular topic, From Here to There, hasn’t been an easy one for me.  Seems my family didn’t take many travel photos in or around anything but cars.

For this post, I went through my various surname folders and located some photos of family in different places and in different modes of transportation. 

This first one is my maternal Grandfather, Joseph A. Milne (1883-1957) standing on a boat.  There’s no information as to where he is or where he’s going.  Since he was born, raised and died in Detroit, Michigan, I can assume he may have been on a lake, somewhere in Michigan.  This photo would have been in the early 1900’s.  My grandparents married in 1906.



Next is a picture of my husband, Ron, with his parents, Gordon & Dorothy Hall.  They traveled to Niagra Falls in 1955.  All the way from San Diego to New York, by car.  Also traveling with Ron & his parents, was his grandmother, Freada Doller Fink. 



This next picture is one of my mother, Patricia Milne, on a pony.  Horseback is a mode of travel and one she and I shared a love of.  I can narrow down the time frame by looking at the address numbers behind my Mom.  The family was living at 5182 Clarendon in Detroit, between 1930 & 1935.  This would make my mother any where from 6-11 yrs. old and I’m guessing closer to six in this photo.  She's so cute.



This next photo is a picture of Bobby Lindsay, sitting in his derby car contemplating how he lost the race.  Robert “Bobby” Lindsay, Jr. is my 2nd cousin once removed.  He is closely related to my cousin, Marian.  Bobby died of Chronic Rheumatic Heart Disease, at the age of 22 on 6 Jun 1946.  Bobby was one of three children born to Robert Lindsay & Wilma Hoefler. His sister died at the age of 5, leaving just one brother who thankfully led a long life.



This last photo is of my Dad and his parents, in a canoe.  Were they just going out or coming in?  They seem awfully dressed up to be riding in a canoe.  My paternal grandparents, Harry W. Gould and Marie Lindsay spent a lot of time up at Port Huron in St. Clair County, Michigan.  They eventually purchased a cottage on the lake, which I visited frequently as a little girl.  My grandmother loved to swim. 



In this boat are – far left, my grandmother, Marie Lindsay Gould, the young man with the cap is my Dad, H. Norman Gould and sitting down is my grandfather, Harry W. Gould.  I can’t say for certain who the other two ladies or the man standing are.  Maybe one of my cousins can help me out here.

CHURCH RECORD SUNDAY–Gordon & Dorothy Hall

Dorothy & Gordon Hall were my husband’s parents.  They joined the Rolando Methodist Church in San Diego, California on 25 May 1956, “publicly confessing Jesus Christ as Lord & Saviour.”  Signed by George M. Hayle, Pastor

A BOX FULL OF TREASURES, SIGNATURES & MORE

 

Yesterday I noticed that I did not have a signature saved for my husband’s father, Gordon Charles Hall.  Gathering the signatures of ancestors is one of my favorite things to do.  I wrote a post about them, what they mean and where to find them back in December 2013.

I knew that I had a box of “important papers” from my husband’s mother, Dorothy.  I’ve gone through the box before.  She loved to save things and was very neat and organized about it.  Her sister, Delphine “Honey” Long, was the same way.  Had I looked at every piece of paper in the box?  I didn't think so.  I retrieved the box from it’s place in the office closet.

 
As I began to look for a piece of paper that would contain my father-in-law’s signature, I came across new and revealing items.
 
TIP:  Maybe it’s just me.  But, when I find a box of “goodies” that has belonged to one of our family members I get pretty excited.  It’s like you can’t look at everything fast enough and you can’t take it all in.  Maybe you only go through some of it and then you get interrupted, distracted or have to take care of everyday life things.  Whatever the reason, ALWAYS go back to these boxes and make sure you’ve properly inventoried every item.  By inventory, I mean scanned and saved to your computer and added to your software database.

Among the many envelopes in Dorothy’s box was one from San Diego Federal Savings & Loan with this written on it – “all papers for 4634 67th including trust deed & title insurance.”  The envelope was postmarked 31 Mar 1959 and addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon C. Hall.

As I went through this one envelope, I did find Gordon Hall’s signature.  While I was at it, I also found Dorothy’s.  Realizing I hadn’t saved her signature yet, I scanned, cropped, saved and added them to my Legacy database.
 

Then I began to look inside other envelopes in the box.  I found Gordon Hall’s dog tags from World War II and other important papers relating to his service to our country.  I sat down with my husband and we looked at several items.  He reminisced about his parents and we smiled at some of Dorothy’s entries in her date books.  I will share more about those in another post.

Today I plan to continue to go through this box and take care of what I started months ago, when I first located this box while cleaning out the office closet.  Life does have a way of distracting us.  But, sometimes, it’s twice the fun when you go back and find treasures you didn’t find the first time.
