What treasures can I share today?

 
How about church records recently received from a church in New York?
 
I called Bethesda Episcopal Church in Saratoga Springs, New York, last month.  I was interested to see if they still held any records from 1877-1900. 
 
I was specifically looking for records for my husband’s great grandfather and his wife, Thomas C. Hall, Cora E. Brown Hall and their son Charles S. Hall.

 
While we can find some records online, we all know, many are still not available.  Some are indexed, but even viewing an index or transcription is not the same as looking at the actual record.  There could be any number of errors on an index or transcription.
 
I did my happy dance this morning when I received an email from the church with 4 records attached!!!

I already had a marriage date & and the marriage certificate for Thomas & Cora.  You can read all about that find here:

But, this image of the church record for their marriage was new to me and gives one more piece of evidence to this fact.
 
What I didn’t have was the other 3 documents – the Baptism and Confirmation for Charles S. Hall and the Burial record for Thomas. Those will now be added to my Legacy database and sourced and added to my Ancestry tree as well.
 
What records have you recently received that made you do a happy dance? I’d love to hear about them.
 
Have you considered calling or emailing a church, funeral home or cemetery to obtain records or information?  This is not my first time doing so and I have found it to be very rewarding.
 
TIP: Keep a record of any calls or emails.  Whether you use your genealogy program for this (I use Legacy), or a spreadsheet, notepad or some other method.  It’s important to keep the date and make note of what you said, who you spoke with, who you emailed etc.
 
When or if I receive information as I did in this case, I not only send an email of thanks, I write a thank you note and many times include a gift card.

CHURCH RECORD SUNDAY ~ Washington Episcopal Diocese of Spokane Church Records, 1870-1970 - The Thorp family

It’s been just one day short of a month since I last posted.  It was an eventful four weeks that had me concentrating on other things, besides my family history. 

We were recently able to get away and spend 10 days in Montana & Idaho.  We flew in and out of Washington and then to our destinations. 

Of course, as any devoted (some would say obsessed) genealogist, I couldn’t help but think of the ancestors that I had researched who had either moved to, or were from Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Today, I’ll share some church records from my THORP family.  This is my direct paternal line through my great grandmother Mae Eve Thorp (1862-1946) who married William Val Gould (1859-1924).

I thought I’d take a look at Thru Lines on Ancestry and see if anything new has popped up.  I was filtering “Potential Ancestors” when I came across a DNA match that is descended from my great grandmother, Mae’s uncle, Monson Thorp, Jr.

Naturally, one thing lead to another and two hours have now passed.  Oh those rabbit holes.  LOL!

I located the Washington Episcopal Diocese of Spokane Records for 1870-1970 In this collection I found 2 baptismal records on one page and a marriage record on another.

Baptismal records for Munson/Monson & Perry Thorp(e) 5 Nov 1905

Monson Elvo Thorp and Perry Elvin Thorp were both baptized on 5 Nov 1905.  They are the two oldest children of Charles “Jay” Thorp & Clara C. Peterson.  You can see my post about the marriage of Charles & Clara here.

Monson was born 12 Mar 1900 in Spokane, Spokane Co., Washington.  Perry was born 29 Jun 1902 in Wallace, Shoshone, Idaho.  They are both my 2nd cousins twice removed. 

Monson married Carmen Marie Chase and he lived to be 82 years old.

Perry married Alice Eglatana Blodgett and lived until his 52nd year.

In searching this Episcopal Diocese record set for other Thorp’s I located the marriage record for Sidney E. Thorp to Virginia Dunn on 30 Jul 1949.  I did not have Sidney in my tree and learned he was the son of Perry & Alice, whom I mentioned above.

Once I'd located the church record for this marriage I was able to find the actual marriage certificate as well.  It's always good to have more than one source for every event.

There is much more work to be done on these Thorp cousins.  How many children were born to each couple, if any?  What kind of work did the men and/or women do?  Did they stay in Washington state?  And so much more.

TREASURE CHEST THURSDAY ~ Baptismal record for Abraham Rosett–1728

Today I’m highlighting a record I located on my first trip to the Family History Library, in June 2011.
 
The record was located in The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, July 1928, page 42.

Also on this page is the baptismal record of my husband’s 5th great granduncle, Johannes Kip.

I located this publication and photographed several pages.  I was at the library for 5 days and took over 500 photographs of books, publications and other data during that first visit to the FHL.
 
TIP: I prefer to use a camera to capture any data I find.  It’s quick & efficient and allows you to see if there was any error in the image when it was taken.  I take along clothes pins to hold book pages open.  I find this method works better for me, than hand held scanners, copy machines or using phones or tablets.

These types of publications can contain many wonderful references to records.
 
Do we still need to try to find the original record? YES.  But, this certainly points us in the right direction.

WHO IS ABRAHAM ROSETT/ROSET?

He is my husband’s 5th great grandfather.

1. Abraham Rosett ²Aug 1728 – 6 Jan 1775 married Catherine Kip on 13 Apr 1752.  She was born 8 Mar 1728/30 and died circa 1761.

2. David Rosett/Rosette 21 Dec 1754 – ¹28 Apr 1819 married Lydia Bailey May 1779. Lydia was born about 1760 and died 23 Dec 1842.

3. Dr. Abraham Rosette 29 Jul 1780 – 8 Apr 1815 married Susan Boylston on 30 May 1804.  Susan was born about 1783 and died 23 Apr 1847.

4. Almira Rosette about 1806 – Sep 1858 married Rev. George Hall on 11 Mar 1834.  Rev. George Hall was born ³4 Jun 1804 and died ^3,44 Sep 1878.

5. Thomas Cornelius Hall ⁵1845 – ⁵18 Jan 1897 married Cora E. Brown 1875-1878.  Cora was born 3 Aug 1854 and died 9 Sep 1933.

6.  Charles Schuyler Hall 5 Mar 1878 – 25 Mar 1953 married Daisy Fern Bright on 15 Oct 1903. Daisy was born 19 Apr 1882 and died 23 Oct 1953.

7. Gordon Charles Hall 29 Jul 1917 – 12 Jan 1966 married Dorothy Beatrice Fink on 22 Aug 1948.  Dorothy was born 7 Nov 1913 and died 6 Oct 1993 (23 years ago today).

CHURCH RECORD SUNDAY–Dorothy Fink Baptismal Record

Died 6 Oct 1993, San Diego, San Diego Co., California

Yesterday as I was going through a metal box that had belonged to my husband's mother, I found a treasure that was folded up at the bottom.  You just never know what you will find and I certainly didn't expect this to be at the bottom of the box with old bank records and deeds.  

Here's the box.  One more note.  If you'll notice the name of the baking company from Buffalo - it's HALL Baking Company.  Funny, because after Dorothy moved to San Diego she married Gordon Hall.

I just love finding items like this.  I’m going to frame this one and hang it in my office with other special documents.
