HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY TO MY MOM ~ she was born 100 years ago

 
Today would have been my Mom’s 100^th birthday
 

I’ve written several posts about my Mom and Dad.  Her mother, Florence Bowden Milne was the genealogist in the family before me.  She, my grandma, left me many wonderful pieces of family information and photographs.

 

Here is a very brief bio of my Mom:

 

Patricia Anne Milne, born 3 Oct 1924, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. Her parents were Joseph Albert Milne and Florence Lenora Bowden.  Pat was the fourth and last child born to her parents.  Her siblings were Dorothy Irene Milne (1907-1920), Robert Andrew Milne (1909-1969) and Joan Esther Milne (1915-1985).  All born in Detroit.

 

Being much younger than her siblings and having never met her sister, Dorothy, who died before my Mom was born, Pat grew up spending quite a bit of time to herself.  She inherited a love of books from her mother and spent a lot of time reading.  I’m thankful that gene was passed down to me as well. She and I would pass books back & forth after reading them.  We both love mysteries and history.

 

Pat always loved animals and passed that love to us as well.  

 

My Mom was married twice.  First to Harry Norman Gould 9 Apr 1949 and second to Joseph Edward Cornelius 12 Feb 1971.

She had 3 children – her oldest, John Whitney Zimmerman, then me, then my brother Harry Norman Gould, II.

 
We lost Mom on 12 Mar 2016, at age 91.

Here we are, her 3 children, John, me and Norm - this is in 2006 when our half brother John W. Zimmerman came to meet us for the first time.  He had searched for his biological parents for 40 yrs. and finally located me via an old genealogy website.  We had always known he was out there somewhere and were thrilled to meet him.  He had a 10 yr relationship with our Mom before she passed away.

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY - March 13th - Honoring my Mom & Dad

I don’t think I’ve ever written a blog post specifically about my own birthday.  So, here it is.  

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves as this is supposed to be Wordless Wednesday.  Or as Randy Seaver of GeneaMusings says “Not So Wordless Wednesday.”  Because it’s hard for a blogger not to write a little something.

On the day before my birthday, in 2016, I lost my Mom.  Because of that my birthday will never be quite the same. I miss you Mom.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOROTHY FINK HALL ~ My husband’s mother–born this day in 1913

Dorothy Beatrice Fink was born on this day in 1913 in Buffalo, Erie, New York.  She was the second child born to Heinrich “Henry” August Fink and Freada Emma Meta Doller.  Dorothy had an older brother, Elwood and two younger siblings, Willard & Delphine “Honey.”

She and her family moved to San Diego, California in 1935.  At age 23 she met and married Floyd O. “Ted” Brown in 1937.  There were no children born to that marriage and they divorced in 1944.

On 22 Jul 1945 Dorothy was 31 years old and she enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  This was just months prior to the end of World War II.  She was honorably discharged from military service 5 Apr 1946. 

On 22 Aug 1948 at age 34, Dorothy married Gordon Charles Hall in Lynwood, Los Angeles, California with her sister Honey and brother-in-law Marion Nelson Long as witnesses.

Gordon and Dorothy had one child, a son, Ronald. 

Dorothy and Gordon enjoyed a comfortable life with their young son, until Gordon’s sudden death of a heart attack, on 12 Jan 1966.  He was only 48 years old.

Dorothy provided a loving and stable home to her son.  She eventually became the grandmother to two young boys.

 

I knew Dorothy for only four short years prior to her death in 1993.  She is remembered by her family as a loving mother and grandmother.

Happy birthday Dorothy.  We all still miss you, especially your son.

Remembering the year 1924 ~ What was it like back then? My Mom was born…….

Today, October 3rd would have been my Mom’s 92nd birthday.  I thought I would take a look at her birth year and see what things were like “back then.”

First of all, my Dad was 12 years old in 1924.

My grandparents Joseph Albert Milne and Florence Bowden Milne would have been 41 and 36, respectively.  My mother was their last child of 4, and apparently, a surprise.

Here’s some trivia about 1924.

• The first Olympic Winter Games were held in Chamonix, France
• Vladimir Lenin dies.  Stalin becomes ruler and holds the position until his death in 1953
• The Boston Bruins host the Montreal Maroons in the very 1st NHL game played in the U.S.
• The United States grants full citizenship to American Indians (what took them so long?)
• The gas chamber is first used for an execution
• Former President Woodrow Wilson dies in his sleep, age 67.
• Life expectancy was 54.1 years
• The President was Calvin Coolidge
• The Nobel prize was not awarded in 1924
