ON THIS DATE IN OUR FAMILY - August 20th

TODAY IS AUGUST 20^th

Today is the birthday of my good friend, Pam. I thought in honor of that I would see who in my family tree was born, married or died on this date.

I use my Legacy software to create a list. Find>Detailed Search and then enter the parameters.

Let’s see what we have. The list contains 18 individuals from our family tree which contains both mine and my husband’s family.

BIRTHS

ANKER, Martha A. - my husband’s maternal great granduncle’s wife - born 20 Aug 1890 in Germany, married Andrew Ludwig on 7 Apr 1921 in Buffalo, Erie, New York.

FORSYTH, Bradley J. - my maternal 2^nd cousin once removed - born 20 Aug 1935 in Michigan – Married Lindsay Weber 30 Oct 1987.

GOULD, Cyrus – born 20 Aug 1841 in Michigan – he is a person of interest in my search for the parents of my paternal 2^nd great grandfather, John C. Gould.

KIMBALL, Ann Eliza – maternal 3^rd great granduncle’s wife’s 1st cousin – born 20 Aug 1845 in Ohio, died 29 Mar 1916 in Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio

PRITCHARD, Thomas Alexander – my paternal 3^rd cousin’s husband’s father – born 20 Aug 1923 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, died 20 Aug 1992 on his 69^th birthday. Married Audrey Hilda Mauer.

MARRIAGES

CLARK, Henry Bryan – my 3^rd cousin 3 times removed – born 14 Jul 1888 in Nebraska and died before 1957. Married Goldie M. Sackett on 20 Aug 1911 in Berrien County, Michigan.

FINK, Elwood Reynolds – my husband’s maternal Uncle – born 5 Nov 1912 in Ebenezer, Erie, New York, died 29 Oct 1997 in San Diego, San Diego Co., California. Married Esther May Shurgour on 20 Aug 1937 in San Diego, California.

GOULD, Theda E. – another person of interest in my search for my paternal 2^nd great grandfather John C. Gould’s parents. She was born 16 Jan 1840 in New York and died 1 Oct 1918 in Oxford, Oakland, Michigan – she married as her 2^nd husband, Jesse G. Hosner on 20 Aug 1903 in Oxford, Oakland, Michigan.

KRAWEC, Dr. Charles – is a match to me via the DNA of his descendants. I haven’t figured out where we connect just yet. He was born 19 Mar 1931 in Wilkes Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania and married Alicia Hedwig Slasinski on 20 Aug 1952 in Dearnborn, Wayne, Michigan.

DEATHS

BOGGS, Andrew Elliot – my maternal 4^th great grandfather, born in 1768 in Pennsylvania and died 20 Aug 1840 in Perry Township, Gallia, Ohio. He married Hannah Jane Bowen on 6 Jan 1794 in Greenbrier Co., Virginia

CALLAHAN, Wanda Mae – my maternal 3^rd cousin twice removed. She was born 13 Nov 1925 in Independence, Montgomery, Kansas and died 20 Aug 2014 in Bayou Vista, Galveston, Texas. She married David Walton in about 1944.

CONNORS, Leo Arthur – my maternal grandaunt’s husband’s son. He was born 1 Jun 1907 in Michigan and sadly died 20 Aug 1907 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan at only 2 months and 19 days old.

DOTY, James – my paternal 5^th great grandfather and one of my Mayflower ancestors. He is the 2^nd great grandson of Mayflower passenger, Edward Doty. James was born 22 Jan 1736/37 in Plymouth, Colonial Massachusetts and died 20 Aug 1817 in Pembroke, Plymouth, Massachusetts. He married in about 1764 Elisabeth Kempton. They had 5 know children, one of whom was Issac, my 4^th great grandfather.

The earliest birth in this group is Cyrus Gould born in 1841.

The earliest marriage is Theda Gould in 1903.

The earliest death is James Doty in 1817.

FRIDAY FINDS ~ At last! A naturalization record for someone in my tree–Bertha Klinoweit Redcap (1898–1934)

Funny how things work sometimes. I had lunch with a friend just last Sunday. As we were talking, I, of course, was talking about my family tree and genealogy etc. This friend isn’t a genealogist, but she was kind enough to listen to me. I didn’t go on too long. LOL!

One thing I mentioned was that in all my 17+ years of researching, I had yet to find a naturalization record for any of my ancestors.

Given that 4 of my 8 great grandparents came here mid to late 1800’s, from Scotland and England, you’d think I would have found one already. They did state in the 1900 census that they were naturalized. And all of them were living in Detroit, Michigan.

I might not have located any of their records….yet, but I have located one. Not a blood relative, but it is a record from Detroit, so I’m happy to know they exist.

The record I have located is for my paternal granduncle’s wife’s brother’s wife. Yes, that’s stretching it a bit. My granduncle Roy Gould married a lady named Emma Redcap and this naturalization record is associated with that family.

Certificate of Arrival for Bertha Klinoweit, 3 Apr 1913

Bertha Klinoweit arrived in the U.S. on 3 Apr 1913, according to her Certificate of Arrival for Naturalization Purposes. She would have been a young girl of 14 years old at the time. This first page of the paperwork states that she arrived on the President Grant. I’ll be looking for a passenger list with her name and will share it with you in a later post.

On this form we learn that she calls herself Mrs. Bertha REDCAP. This gives her address in Detroit, her occupation and her date of birth – 22 Jul 1898. Best of all it gives her location of birth in Germany as Sanseitschen. This verifies her arrival in New York on 3 Apr 1913 on the U.S.S. President Grant. This page also lists her husband, Charles, his date of birth and place and the date of their marriage as 15 Aug 1926. Doesn't get much better than that for genealogical information.

Bertha signed the page on 10 Nov 1927 and one of the witnesses was my granduncle’s wife, Emma GOULD. Emma also signed the form and now I have both of their signatures (click here to see the other family signatures I've collected)

HERE IS THE LAST PAGE OF BERTHA’S NATURALIZATION PAPERS

On this page we see that Bertha declared an oath of allegiance to the Constitution of the United States and denounced the German Reich. She signed this page as well.

The court date is given as 13 Feb 1928 and her Certificate of Naturalization No. is 2728882.

I expect that Bertha was quite proud on the day she took her oath and became a U.S. citizen.

Bertha & Charles had two sons, Edward Charles, born in 1929 and Richard Robert, born 1931.

Sadly, Bertha died at the young age of 36 years, on 24 Nov 1934. She never got to see her little boys grow up. The cause of death was listed as Edema of brain – pulmonary thrombosis/fatty pancreas and liver.

THOSE PLACES THURSDAY ~ Towns or roads in Michigan using the name GOULD

Ever curious about my maiden name, I thought I would find out how many places in Michigan have Gould in their name.

I’ve always known about Gould Rd. in Macomb County, Michigan. I’ve been on the road during a genealogy road trip and I photographed the street sign. I’ve even contacted the County of Macomb and tried to find out who the road was named after. So far, no luck with that.

Since my Gould family lived in Armada, Macomb, Michigan it’s a curiosity as to whether this road could have been named for them. The burial location of immediate family related to these Goulds is at Rose Hill Cemetery (a place I’ve also been), and is 1.6 miles from Gould Rd.

This past week I discovered there is a GOULD City in Upper Michigan. I never knew that. It looks very rural. I would love to visit. I’ve never been to Upper Michigan and it’s high on my list of places to go.

Here’s the location of Gould City and also an aerial view.

There’s even a road in Gould City named S. Gould City Road.

And to my surprise, when I conducted a Google search of Detroit, Michigan, looking for the Gould name, I located a Gould Street. It’s down along the Detroit River, not too far from Ambassador Bridge. And, it’s only 12.9 miles, a 20 minute drive from where my grandparents, Harry & Marie Gould lived, at 14520 Asbury Park.

This has been a fun exercise. I learned things I didn’t know before, and that’s always a good thing.

Now to find out, if possible, who these streets and roads and cities are named after. Are they related to me? I know here in my small town of Ramona, CA., we have many roads named after people who once settled here and had an impact on our town.
